College Sport
Sport is an integral component of school at Francis Douglas Memorial College. We are gaining national recognition for many sports ranging from Adventure Racing to Rugby. The school is very proud of its sporting success at an elite level but it also strives hard to provide every opportunity for student participation in sporting activities at all ability levels. It is our intention to ensure that as many boys as possible take an active part in the sporting co-curricular activities our College offers. Last year our student participation was 80% and the staff involved in sport at College was over 50% (some of the highest in the province and the county).
The School’s major sports have developed strong national and international links over recent years. Cricket has toured Australia and played in an Australasian Catholic Schools tournament and Rugby has toured both Australia and Canada. Many boys have benefited from the experiences offered by overseas tours and by the reciprocal hosting of visiting teams and further tours in the future are encouraged.
FDMC offers a comprehensive sports programme allowing athletes who want to challenge their limits and strive for greater success at training and during competition. Involvement in sport fosters a sense of sportsmanship and fair play, teamwork, leadership and pride in performance and is highly valued by the boys of the School. Most significantly, participation in organised College sport allows boys to feel a sense of belonging and pride in their school.
The College possesses excellent sporting facilities with expansive grounds including well drained sports fields for Football and Rugby, 3 artificial cricket pitches and a well prepared grass wicket for our cricket sides, a multi-purpose artificial turf playing surface, tennis courts, cricket nets, existing gymnasium, an 50 m outdoor swimming pool and a fitness centre which are all located on the school premises.
Sport at Francis Douglas is in great heart. The active involvement of staff in the School’s sporting programme is a major strength. Without such strong support by the staff we simply could not offer the variety and quality that currently exists in our sports programme. Parental help is also very much appreciated and welcomed.
